TeChico.net has started a technical blog which has the daily, ok not quite daily, experiences of one tech lost in the IT gumbo.

1 Tech \ 1 Blog is something I started after narrowly finding a fix for a Dailup Networking problem which had plagued one of my users for too long. I found a link to the resource after nearly two hours of searching through irrelevant TechNet articles and other tech forums.

So, whenever I find something that I don't think is well documented/somewhat overly confusing I will post my experience with it in the hopes that someone will find it before they have to waste 2-3 hours scouring the net.

Also, I will post reviews, FAQs and other things I think might help other people searching for a friendly page.

Google AdSense Payment Received

Today I received my first Google Adsense payment. The mind-blurring total was $107.14 and spanned a period just over 8 months.

First I would again like to ask...what the hell are you all doing here?...a google search gone wrong perhaps? Anyways, thanks for the clicks my loyal readers. If I hadn't have gone to a VPS hosting solution I would actually be making money off of my website!

I would like to make another plug for Rimuhosting. I am not terribly easy to please and yes I am one of those 'users' who will call 12 times in an hour when my server is down. I've only been down once since using them for almost 6 months. And it was probably my fault, I'm also one of those users who will either master it....or break it beyond repair.

Shasta Caverns

My partner and I went to the shasta caverns last week. I uploaded a bunch of the pictures as I thought someone might find them interesting. I was impressed by the pictures as digital cameras are known for not performing well in poorly lit areas, a cave for example.

Our visit to Redding was nice eventhough it was damn hot!

I've been a little distracted from my normal life by a new client of mine. It's a moderately sized project for a local organization which I happen to like. Since I like their organizational mission I've been putting in more hours than I would for a normal client. The pay is half of what I normally charge but, like I said, I like the organization and my summer turned out to be available.

Anyways, so that's where I've been for the last week and a half...neglecting Jujubee and the .5 readers here. :) I plan on working on SBP, as I have promised a couple of it's users :(, and working on this server a little...the subdomains aren't directing properly when they're in https mode. Eh, it really only effects me so....

Aight, off to Reno for me and my partner, yay!

I have made a minor update to SBP. It's effects, however, are major. All of the people who have emailed me/posted a support request should update to this latest version. This version no longer requires that Register Globals = On.

I'm sorry SBP was so insecure before, I was just being lazy.

So, I was being the wonderful son that I am and I was heading to Durham to see my parents when 'Bam' I was rear ended by some dumbass. Now, I know everyone makes mistakes and hey, who really cares right? Well, this dumbass had the balls to appear angry that I was in his way. Well, I'm really fucking sorry I was in your way capt. impatient. Yes, I did decided not to run into the guy in-front of me...I also decided to stop for the red light, all of which I suppose put me in my current location.

To make a long, boring story short, the bastard gave me a hard time about it all and wanted to just call it even and drive away....well of course he did! He hit a car stopped at a red light! Don't think so dumbass. I have full coverage, how about you? To top that off I don't even pay for it, so there. Hell yeah I'm submitting a claim.

The pertinent piece of information I have left out is that he wasn't going very fast and there wasn't any significant damage. The best I could tell he scraped my bumper a little and it 'might' be angled down a little. When I alleged that at the scene and told him I would 'of course' have my body-shop take a peek at it just to be safe he wasn't too happy. He went on to tell me that they're all out to screw people out of their money. I don't know, probably not anymore than some dumbass who just rear-ended a stopped car and is worried about his premiums going up! The dude tried to force me and my partner to sign a deposition stating there was no damage...LOL dumbass. Shoulda asked him if I looked like a bitch...'cause if I don't look like a bitch then why are you trying to fuck me like a bitch?' [lame Pulp Fiction reference]

Anyways, I enjoyed the formal conversation with my GEICO agent who was very polite and answered all of my questions. I doubt there will be any significant claim or anything but lord knows I'm not gonna let that jerk con me into paying money that he should be. But, that's up to GEICO they're the ones who have to deal with it now...ahh coverage.

Calendar Girls

Although this movie was definitely not my first choice it is definitely the best girly movie I can remember. It's got a good story, great acting and it's a true story. As you may have guessed my partner and I rented this for my mother.

Guys, if you have to go with a girly movie, might as well bite the bullet and get this movie. It will atleast make you laugh. And, there is even a little titty...don't know if it's a good thing though :)...you be the judge. A solid 7.4/10.0 (adjust up considering it was a girly movie.)

Van Helsing

Van Helsing was a great movie. It was a little over the top but, after seeing the previews, I feel I was expecting a little more surreal style. To that end, I think it was a very successful movie. It's working of the frankenstein, werewolf and vampire legends into one new, interesting story was great.

I would give it a 8.6/10.0 for it's entertainment value, definitely would suggest seeing this in the theater.

O cruel summer

Summer has fully attacked Chico now. My partner and I had to use the air conditioner, I'll say to save the server. It was in the high 80's which is actually down from 94 the other day, however, today was the first day that I felt miserable. No matter how much water I drink, my thirst remains. Had to whine at least a little to all those who don't care or are in their server's nice 62 degree room.

Yet another domain exploit for silly IE. To see if you are vulnerable you can mousover on this link ===> here [secunia.com]. Or you can click on the link and go to the secunia website which hosts the exploit's vulnerability page. The site is safe and won't cause any damage to your computer. The only danger that these type of exploits pose is in people thinking they are at a secure site when they may have been redirected.

I can't think of any such exploit that has ever been found for Mozilla? If you know of one off the top or your head, comment.

Man on Fire

Foreshadowed by the rage we experienced with the drunk driver, I forgot to post my review of Man on Fire.

I found Man on Fire to be a great action movie. My partner, who doesn't really care for the action genre also thought it was quite good. It wasn't her first choice but, in the end, she thought it was pretty good. I give it a 8.8/10.0. [Updated*]

Drunk Driving

A drunk driver hit a parked car by our house today. We live on the same block as a school. Each day children go to and from school all around our neighborhood.

Here are two pictures of the incident that I found most compelling. People need to think before they drink and drive. This could have been a lot worse, any day of the week.

Having been blown away by a feed from PubSub Concepts, I decided I too must take part in this miracle. I've become increasingly interested in RSS, RDF, XML or whatever format you want your data streamed. As of this writing I currently maintain exactly 60 feeds. 14 of which are my own creation [The content, with the exception of one, is not mine].

For those of you unfamiliar with XSL check out it's w3.org home. Basically, it allows you to add, subtract or simply stylize a XML, etc. feed. It uses simple logic, syntax that anyone who has done anything with CSS and maybe a little programming can pick up rather quickly. A couple hours later and I have adapted all my feeds to use it for browser viewing. For a better idea of what XSL is, check out an example [CSU, Chico - Events and Calendars Feed]. I have added almost 20 sources to my feeds. Although they are mearly a mirror of what you might find on your own, some you have to sign up for, etc.

I plan to add: LA Times, NY Times, MSNBC, Onion, Grisoft and maybe CSU, Chico Events & Calendars.
